Peanut aren't "just peanuts"– they're a major economic force!

In China and India, which together produce 22 million tons of peanuts, as well as in the African peanut-growing countries, more than 95% of the peanut harvest is used locally as a staple.
In 2002, 58,561 tons of peanut seeds were imported in Germany, of which 20,019 tons came from Argentina, 27,119 tons from the US and 2,710 tons from China.

The import volume of peanuts in 2002 thereby constituted a value of over € 635,000.

Peanuts aren't nuts!
You can gather this from the English name: PEAnuts are related to "peas". That means they belong to the bean family.

The technical English name for the peanut is GROUNDnut, because it grows in the ground. That's why it's also called, in the German, an "EARTHnut".
